Winning the world famous Hickstead Derby must surely be the ultimate dream for any top class showjumper – but for only the elite few, is it ever likely to happen?
It’s an achievement that few will have the joy of experiencing, but for showjumping hero, Loughnatousa WB, standing at an imposing 17.1hh, not only has he just won the coveted 2015 Hickstead Derby with Irish rider Trevor Breen in the saddle, he was the victor in 2012 with Paul Beecher on board. Notching up these two wins, makes him the only horse to win the title twice with different riders proving he’s well and truly in a class of his own.
Trained by Bernice Cuthbert in Oxfordshire for the last six years and owned by Patricia Brown, Loughnatousa WB, at 16 years old, is described as being the ultimate ‘powerhouse’ by racehorse trainer, show hunter judge and former showjumping trainer Bryan Smart who says he is all muscle and full of power through his hindquarters. “To have won two Hickstead Derbys with different jockeys, shows he is built for the job” said Bryan.
Amongst other important victories, Loughnatousa WB was equal first in the ‘Puissance’ at the Horse of the Year Show in 2012, jumping the world famous wall at a height over which neither he nor his rider could see.
